$1 Silver Certificate Series 1934: How to Identify It

Redesigned following the 1934 Silver Purchase Act: the text below the Washington portrait changed from ONE SILVER DOLLAR to ONE DOLLAR; the Treasury seal moved to the right, overlapping the ONE; a blue numeral 1 was added on the left. The Funnyback design on the back stayed unchanged.

This certifies that there is on deposit in the Treasury of the United States of America X dollars in silver payable to the bearer on demand (rewritten after the 1934 Silver Purchase Act, after which the Treasury was no longer required to hold physical silver dollar coins for redemption and could redeem in silver bullion/granules)

• Front text reads ONE DOLLAR (no longer ONE SILVER DOLLAR)
• Blue seal is on the right, overlapping the ONE
• A blue numeral 1 appears on the left
• The back is still the large Funnyback ONE

The back is the same as the 1928 series (both Funnyback), so distinguish the two by the front text and seal position/the numeral 1 on the left; the difference from the 1935 series is that the 1935 series back already uses the current design and the numeral on the left becomes gray and smaller.

Collectors judge a $1 Silver Certificate Series 1934 by condition first (crisp and uncirculated versus folded or worn), then by whether it is a star note or carries a fancy serial number, then by the series letter and any recognised variety.
