What this series looks like
On November 3, 1975, Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon announced the reissue of the $2 note to save costs; from April 13, 1976 (Jefferson's birthday), it became available at banks as a reissued Federal Reserve Note, with the seal and serial numbers changed to green. The front design is essentially the same as the 1928 series, while the back was changed to an engraved reproduction of John Trumbull's painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (not an exact copy of the original painting). On the issue date, some post offices offered an "APR 13 1976" postmark (a first-day-of-issue commemorative practice that coincided with, but was not specifically issued for, the U.S. Bicentennial). A total of 590,720,000 notes were printed in this series, with the final batch completed in 1978.
